About Us

Who We Are

LESLA Alliance is a community-led organisation rooted in Long Eaton, created to honour the legacy of the Windrush generation and their descendants, while also serving the wider Long Eaton community.

We exist to bring people together across generations and backgrounds through shared history, care, and community action.

Our Story

LESLA began as a grassroots Association shaped by lived experience and local relationships. What started as a small community effort has grown into a trusted space for connection, celebration, and support.

As our activities and reach have expanded, so has our responsibility to the people we serve, the volunteers who support our work, and the community we represent.

That growth has led us to strengthen how we operate, plan, and govern our work for the long term.

Our Name

You may notice we now use the name LESLA Alliance, a small but significant change from LESLA.

This reflects how our work has grown, bringing together community members, volunteers, and partners to work alongside one another.

While our name has evolved, our roots,  purpose, values, and commitment to the community remain exactly the same.

The Communities We Serve

Our work is open, accessible and inclusive. We primarily focus on:

  • Members of the Long Eaton Windrush generation and their descendants
  • Older people and those at risk of isolation
  • Young people and future community leaders
  • The wider Long Eaton community

Our Aims

 LESLA Alliance exists to:

  • Celebrate, preserve, and share the history and contributions of the Windrush generation and their descendants
  • Reduce isolation and strengthen wellbeing through community connection
  • Support volunteering, skills development, and community leadership
  • Create inclusive opportunities for people to shape and support their community

These aims guide everything we do, from events and activities to partnerships and fundraising.

Our Community Focus: Young People & Elder Care

Supporting Future Leaders

Supporting Older Generation

Supporting Older Generation

We believe in the potential of young people and the importance of creating spaces where they feel seen, supported, and encouraged to grow.

Through connection with role models, opportunities to build confidence and skills, and involvement in community life, we support young people to explore their ambitions, develop a sense of belonging, and contribute positively to the world around them. Our approach is about encouragement, exposure, and empowerment, helping young people imagine what’s possible and feel confident taking their next steps.

Supporting Older Generation

Supporting the older generation is at the heart of LESLA Alliance’s work.

From sharing a cup of tea and conversation to helping someone feel confident getting out and about. We focus on connection, dignity, stability, and well-being. Small moments of care can make a big difference, reducing isolation, building trust, and bringing joy back into everyday life.

We believe our older generation deserves to feel valued, respected, supported in the community they call home.

Supporting the Windrush Generation and their Descendants

Heritage & Legacy

As part of our legacy and cultural work, LESLA Alliance provides targeted support to members of the Windrush generation and their descendants. This may include:

  • Culturally rooted activities and gatherings open to all
  • Community support shaped by lived experience
  • Legacy-focused initiatives that honour history and strengthen wellbeing and education.

This support is delivered based on need and purpose, not on membership status. It reflects our commitment to preserving and honouring the Windrush legacy, their contributions, and their inclusion in the Long Eaton community.

How We're Growing

LESLA Alliance is currently transitioning to Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) status.

This step reflects how the organisation has grown and our commitment to:

  • Strong governance and accountability
  • Responsible stewardship of funds
  • Long-term sustainability
  • Delivering clear public benefit

Until this process is completed we will continue to operate in line with Charity Commission governance standards and remain focused on serving our community with care and integrity.

LESLA Alliance is overseen by a Trustee Board with responsibility for the organisation’s direction, integrity, and accountability.

We operate with clear policies and procedures covering safeguarding, financial management, fundraising, volunteering, and decision-making.

These are reviewed regularly to ensure our work is safe, transparent, and in the best interests of the community.
